I studied a four-year MEng Civil Engineering degree at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2013. Whilst there, I became increasingly interested in renewable energy generation including wind, wave and tidal; my fourth year project was the design of a tidal barrage in the River Mersey.  After University I worked for 18 months on clean water sites across the South West as a Site Engineer. While reading up about Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, I saw that they were recruiting for Graduate Civil Engineers and sent in my application. Two months later I was working for Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP).

At TLP I work in the Future Lagoons team, looking to develop a fleet of tidal lagoons around the UK and abroad after Swansea. This includes optimising the layouts and all design aspects, taking into account the social, environmental and engineering impacts on the design. Once preliminary designs are in place, we can estimate costs for each of these lagoons. I also assist the Swansea Bay team where required and work with our contractors and consultants on various different studies. A key part is working with the modelling team to help maximise energy output and mitigate the impact of the lagoons.

Working at TLP is great. I get to work on first-of-a-kind projects that will make a huge difference to the UK. It’s a hard-working, diverse team of people from a range of backgrounds with massive experience. Being in small teams means you get to do a whole range of tasks, and this is helping me to progress quickly towards professional membership. As if things couldn’t get any better, we have Cake Friday, which is as good as it sounds!  (So it’s useful that we also get discounted gym membership next door!)
