Terrestrial ecology refers to the plants and animals on land which may be affected by a tidal lagoon project. Development of a tidal lagoon will result in direct and indirect impacts to terrestrial ecology during construction, operation and decommissioning phases. The EIA work carried out for coastal processes, coastal birds, intertidal ecology and terrestrial noise and vibration will all feed into the assessment of terrestrial ecology.

Potential impacts include:

  • Visual disturbance
  • Noise disturbance
  • Temporary and/or permanent habitat loss, degradation, fragmentation or modification
  • Introduction of new species
  • Pollution of environment

Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay

It is envisaged that the terrestrial footprint of the Project will include landfall points of breakwaters, temporary construction compounds and infrastructure, the terrestrial component of any new infrastructure required to connect to the National Grid and onshore operation and control infrastructure. A wide range of baseline surveys were undertaken to inform assessment, including Phase 1 habitat, National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys, bats, breeding and over-wintering birds, otters, reptiles and invertebrates. The impact assessment was undertaken in accordance with the ‘Guidelines for Ecological Impact Assessment in the United Kingdom’ published by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (2006) (which have since been updated).  As part of the project, Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay are creating several habitats including saltmarsh, coastal grassland and dunescape in order to enhance the local biodiversity. The development of these habitats will be monitored throughout operation.
