Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP) is leading the development of tidal lagoon technology within the UK. Initially focussed on the development of the world’s first tidal lagoon at Swansea Bay (a 320MW scheme), TLP has now started the development phase for a programme of five further lagoons. It aims to bring sustainability, reliability and long-term security to the UK energy mix.

In tandem with this, TLP’s vision is to enhance biodiversity (have a net positive effect) alongside the generation of clean energy through its Ecosystems Enhancement Programme (EEP).

Key to the success of the enterprise is the quality and professionalism of the engineers (and other individuals) it hires, as they will be vital to achieving TLP’s goal of driving forward the development of truly world leading innovative solutions in order to meet the UK’s future energy needs.

TLP’s engineering team provide the engineering input across all relevant work areas (Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Coastal Engineering etc.) to enable the achievement of TLP’s goal.

Purpose of the role:

Tidal lagoons will change and/or reduce intertidal areas, both within the lagoon area and possibly adjacent to the lagoon. As a result, TLP will need to mitigate and compensate for this and intends to do this via the EEP. Hence a key appointment for TLP is that of a Coastal Engineer who will work at the Head Office in Gloucester.

We are looking for an enthusiastic engineer to assist with coastal and fluvial and general engineering design duties, as well as the eventual construction process, in support of the EEP, the strategic objectives for which include:

Restoring and creating new wetland sites, which maximise biodiversity and affords opportunities for climate adaptation, flood protection, recreation, tourism and education.

Supporting restoration efforts for migratory and resident fish and birds (e.g. barrier removal).

Delivering enhancement initiatives for relevant features listed under the Habitats Directive, IUCN Red List species and UK BAP priority species.

Enabling changes in land management practices to support biodiversity and water quality improvements.

This will include the preparation of concept/outline designs for managed realignment and regulated tidal exchange schemes, as well as for river restoration (for example) projects, tender specifications, budget preparation, programme management and site supervision.

Key responsibilities & accountabilities:

Your key responsibility will be to represent the company as the client and provide coastal/fluvial and general engineering assistance to the engineering and EEP teams in the Gloucester office, particularly in the context of habitat creation and restoration.

You will be exposed to a large variety of engineering activities, potentially including seawall design/modification, dredging, piling works, site investigations, earthworks etc.

Work responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking feasibility studies.
  • Preparation of conceptual project designs and site lay-outs.
  • Preparation of tender documents and drafting technical requirements.
  • Tender evaluation.
  • Budget development.
  • Design coordination and supervision of consultants and contractors.
  • Checking consultants work, including claim management.
  • Cost and project management, including programme management.
  • Supporting planning and environmental evaluations.
  • Preparing project submissions and presentations.

Skills, capabilities & knowledge:

You will have a university degree and practical experience in either civil, maritime or environmental engineering.

Specifically, you will:

  • Have a BEng/BSc or preferably MEng/MSc degree.
  • Broad, practical engineering experience probably from a consulting background.
  • Proven experience with applicable engineering standards and commercial contract conditions.
  • Multi-disciplinary project experience, with involvement in environmental regeneration projects.
  • Experience either with a contractor or with a consulting firm.
  • Have excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Be a team player.
  • Have good project management skills.
  • Have a strong background and understanding in coastal and/or riverine engineering design work.
  • Self-motivated and willing to learn new skills and knowledge.
