Portmead Primary Pupils Present Model Lagoons

Year five pupils from Portmead Primary School have been busy finding out why Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon will become so much more than just a power station.

The pupils have studied the proposals for the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon as part of their ‘bend and flow’ topic. Their work included classroom discussion and the chance to make their own model versions of the proposed tidal lagoon.

Working with Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc, class teacher Mr Dowsett led the project and says that the pupils were delighted to get involved:

“Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is one of the most high profile projects in the area and our pupils were therefore very keen to find out more about the development in a very practical way. They’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions, debate the benefits of the project and consider the need for renewable energy. It has been a great experience for them all.”

Joanna Lane, Education Officer for Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc adds:

“We are visiting local schools and arranging first hand experiences for young people to consider the development. Our aim is to reconnect children and young people to nature and their local environment and develop their understanding of global climate change and renewable energy. We hope that developing education and outreach programmes based on the lagoon will encourage the development of self-discovery, boosting physical wellbeing and inspiring the younger generation to consider energy projects and new technology in a first-hand way.”
