Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc begins a series of Supply Chain Awareness Events in Wales

Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc has announced a series of awareness events to introduce Welsh construction and advanced manufacturing businesses to the project’s tier one delivery partners.

Organised in conjunction with Welsh Government, Construction Futures Wales and Business Wales, the series starts at Liberty Stadium, Neath Road, Swansea on Tuesday 21 July. An initial schedule follows and details of all subsequent events will be listed at https://wales.business-events.org.uk/en/events/swansea-bay-tidal-lagoon-supplier-event/

Tuesday 21st July, 8.30am Liberty Stadium, Swansea

Wednesday 22nd July, 7.30am Parc Y Scarlets, Llanelli

Friday 24th July, 7.30am The Bridge Innovation Centre, Pembroke Dock

The project’s major delivery partnerships announced to date are: China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) as Preferred Bidder for Marine Works; General Electric and Andritz Hydro as Turbine Preferred Bidders; Laing O’Rourke as Turbine Housing Preferred Bidder; and Alan Griffiths Ltd as Public Realm Ancillary Works Preferred Bidder.

Ioan Jenkins, Development Director for Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc: “It’s through initiatives like this that we will be able to maximise local content in the project. Working with Welsh Government, we will hold awareness events throughout the Swansea Bay region this summer.”

“We have over 1000 local businesses registered on our system as being interested in securing work on the project. These events will give those companies an opportunity to better understand the procurement process and the opportunities available.”

Roger Evans MBE, Chair of the Tidal Lagoon Industry Advisory Group: “Developing a supply chain that has the skills and capacity to service Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is critical to ensuring that Wales is best placed to take advantage of this emerging industry. That’s why it is so exciting to be working with global leaders like GE, Andritz, CHEC and Laing O’Rourke who are now beginning the process of identifying local contractors and suppliers to be part of the journey with us.”

Tidal Lagoon Power intends to follow the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon with five full-scale tidal lagoons in UK waters. Between them, the six projects could contribute £27bn to UK GDP during construction and provide 8% of the UK’s electricity for the next 120 years. A report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research found that the emergence of a global tidal lagoon industry could present an export industry valued at £70bn to the UK economy.

All major tender opportunities for Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc are listed at www.sell2wales.gov.uk. The awareness events are free to attend but registration is essential. Please visit https://wales.business-events.org.uk/en/events/swansea-bay-tidal-lagoon-supplier-event/

Events are aimed specifically at construction, operation & maintenance and advanced manufacturing companies. Companies will only be permitted to attend one event.
